
Two stones, both deep red, both magnificent — yet worlds apart in composition, rarity, and price. Here is how to tell them apart.
Of all the gemological questions we are asked, this is the most common: is this stone a ruby, or is it a garnet? The confusion is understandable. Both are deep red, both have been prized for millennia, and many stones in antique pieces — inherited rings, grandmother's brooches — were never definitively identified. Modern gemology can answer the question in minutes. Understanding why the answer matters can take a lifetime.
Ruby is a variety of corundum (aluminium oxide, Al₂O₃) whose red colour is caused by traces of chromium. A corundum of any other colour is a sapphire — ruby is the only exception to the rule, and this exclusivity is part of what makes it extraordinary. The finest rubies, from the Mogok Valley of Myanmar, owe their colour to the same chromium content that causes fluorescence: the stone appears to glow red under ultraviolet light, and even in dim candlelight.
Garnet is not a single mineral but a group of related silicate minerals that share the same cubic crystal structure. The variety most commonly confused with ruby is pyrope garnet (magnesium aluminium silicate) or almandine garnet (iron aluminium silicate). Their red colour comes from iron and manganese rather than chromium — which is why garnet does not fluoresce and lacks the internal fire of a fine ruby.

The price difference between ruby and garnet is one of the most dramatic in gemology. A 1-carat pyrope garnet of fine colour might sell for ₹5,000–₹15,000. A 1-carat Burmese ruby of comparable colour and clarity — untreated, with a GIA or Gübelin certificate — would sell for ₹8,00,000–₹25,00,000. A 'pigeon's blood' ruby of the same weight, from the finest lots, has sold at auction for over ₹2 crore per carat.
The price differential reflects rarity. Gem-quality garnet is found on every continent. Unheated, certified Burmese ruby of fine colour is among the rarest materials on earth.
The majority of rubies sold today — approximately 97% by volume — have been heat-treated to improve colour and clarity. Treatment is accepted in the trade when disclosed, and treated rubies are genuine rubies. An unheated ruby of fine quality commands a significant premium over its treated equivalent, and both GIA and Gübelin laboratories now issue certificates that specify treatment status.
Garnet deserves mention not as ruby's inferior substitute, but as a remarkable stone in its own right. Tsavorite garnet — the vivid green variety from Kenya — rivals the finest emeralds in colour and exceeds them in durability. Colour-change garnet, which appears green in daylight and red in incandescent light, is one of the most remarkable phenomena in gemology. Spessartite garnet, the orange variety from Nigeria and Namibia, has no equivalent among other gems.
